Welcome to Mexico City

Location: Valley of Mexico, in the central region of the country

Population: 8,918,653 million inhabitants

Altitude: 2240 meters (7350 feet) above sea level

Temperature: Mexico City has a temperate climate with an average temperature of 16.6°C. The highest temperatures are in late spring (above 28°C), while winter lows can drop to 0°C. The rainy season is from May to October.

Language: Spanish. English is spoken in most hotels and tourist services.

Electricity: 110V at 60 Hz. The Sockets are flat pin, type B.

Mexico City, previously known as the Federal District, is one of the biggest, most dynamic cities in the world, with innumerable pre-Hispanic and colonial constructions and large modern buildings.

Most tourist attractions are found in and around the Historic Center, better known as the Zócalo. However, each neighborhood (colonia) has different attractions, from museums and archeological areas to local restaurants and markets.

The Historic Center, Xochimilco, the Luis Barragán House and Studio, and the central campus of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) have been declared World Heritage sites, but are only a few of many attractions.

Currency and payment methods

The Mexican peso is the official currency of Mexico. Banknotes are issued in denominations of 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1000 pesos. Coins worth 10, 20, and 50 cents, and 1, 2, 5, 10, and 20 pesos are in circulation.

Foreign currency exchange

This should be done only at exchange bureaus at the airport or in hotels and banks, never on the street. The exchange rate changes daily, with the United States Dollar as an official benchmark. In recent months, the dollar has been worth about 18 pesos.

Tipping

In Mexico, tipping is not included in checks and bills and is totally voluntary (approximately 10%).

General safety

Like in any other city, you need to take care of your personal belongings and not leave them unattended. Be careful in high-traffic tourist areas and make sure your personal belongings are not visible. Keep them in a safe place, such as a hotel safe.

Your health in Mexico

As a traveler, you should be aware of the health risks involved in your trip and the recommended vaccinations.

Tourist Destinations

Present-day Mexico City combines its historical heritage with modern technology and infrastructure, offering visitors its archaeological jewels, colonial buildings, palaces, castles, forests, museums, restaurants, shows, nightclubs, large shopping malls, and one of the most important bullfighting arenas and soccer stadiums in the world, among many other attractions.
Hotels can provide more information on touristic activities.

Tours

  • If you want to appreciate the panorama of one of the most important avenues of Mexico City from multiple perspectives, we recommend the Turibús bus tour that passes by Paseo de la Reforma, Chapultepec, Centro Histórico, and Roma - Condesa.
  • Departure: Auditorio Nacional
Every day from 9:00 to 21:00 hrs. Information Center phone number: 5133-2424
Tickets are sold on the Turibús and narration is offered in Spanish, English, French, German, Italian, and Japanese.

  • Teotihuacán Pyramids and Basílica de Guadalupe.

  • Tepoztlán, a typical Mexican pueblo one hour away from Mexico City.

  • Taxco, a colonial city, cradle of Mexican silverware, 2.5 hours away from Mexico City.

  • Puebla, a beautiful colonial city 2.5 hours away from Mexico City.

Shows

Mexico City offers a wide variety of shows for all types of audiences. Consulting the listings that appear daily in newspapers and magazines is recommended, particularly Tiempo Libre and Onde. The National Auditorium and the Palace of Fine Arts are the most visited.
Consult the website http://www.auditorio.com.mx to see the program and schedules at the National Auditorium.

Restaurants

At restaurants in Mexico City you can find international food from almost everywhere in the world, but we highly recommend restaurants with Mexican food for the great variety, unique flavor (usually spicy), and originality of dishes.

Transport

Airport

The “Benito Juárez” International Airport is located in the eastern part of Mexico City. The airport has national and international flights. It has two terminals, and the departure and arrival depend on the airline, so it is important to check on the ticket for the specific terminal. For international flights, it is require arriving three hours before departure. Beware to take into consideration the traffic jam in order to program your departure to the airport.

Transportation between airport and hotel

The United Nations recommends that staff and visitors use the authorized taxi services, i.e., on-site taxis operating from the facilities of the Mexico City International Airport or hotels, or that can be requested by telephone. These include the following:

Taxis Nueva Imagen: 01 (55) 57161616
